The Issue

In the Northeast area of Kansas City, MO, there lies Scarritt Elementary School that closed back in 2010. It was eventually turned into a visual landmark for the area from 2014-2016. It's definitely a vacant building that has loads of potential. In an area that is composed of immigrants, low-income people, and other similar folks, a residential building is the last thing the community needs. The reason why is that it will only turn into unaffordable and unnecessary housing. If it gets made into such a place, it'll increase the rent of other surrounding housing. Increased prices will only cause more harm to the social and financial well-being of the Northeast Kansas City community. Many people of the community have chimed in that they don't want it to be turned into housing either.

With that said, we have ideas to turn Scarritt Elementary School into a cultural and educational center for the community. It'll be a place that hosts events and services ranging from art classes and exhibitions, language courses, gym, music & theater performances, yoga lessons, martial arts classes, conferences, and more. For we know that having a place where people can come together and exist as a community does wonders -- but also, being a resource that the people of Northeast KC can reach out to would help alleviate crime and poverty as people would have the need to better themselves and their lives met.

But we need to act as quickly as possible before the school falls into the hands of someone thinking more for profits versus the well-being of the community. So, help us voice to the right people today!!
