Save Sarah Sze’s “Still Life with Landscape, Model for a Habitat”
The Issue
Sarah Sze is a renowned contemporary artist who is known for her dynamic large-scale installations. In June 2011, Sze created a metropolis of architectural models, for the Highline Project, that creates a trajectory between the lush gardens of the Highline and the concrete jungle of New York City. Her piece, “Still Life with Landscape, Model for a Habitat”, is not simply an installation but an observatory and an experiment, which models systems of development and growth, and attempts to capture nature in situ. The piece consists of perches, feeding spots and birdbaths that encourages the creation of a community of birds, butterflies, and various insects. Sze’s installation has become an integral part of the Highline’s ecosystem. Sze’s installation has evolved from an architectural frame to an organic living environment that is embedded in the ecosystem. As the Highline boardwalk bisects the installation, the audience can enter and travel through the piece while observing and investigating the little creatures the artwork supports.
The installation has become a beloved landmark in New York's City's High Line Park. Please sign this petition to keep this is an iconic and important piece of contemporary art in a public park for everyone to enjoy.
