I've learned that at last night's City of Pompano budget meeting (7/18/23), one of our Commissioners proposed permanently closing Sand and Spurs Park. Mayor Hardin and all Commissioners except Commissioner Rhonda Eaton voted in favor of this.

There has been no feasibility study as to how to better activate this park. The horse stables, the feeling that you're in the middle of the countryside - this is a one-of-a-kind facility that no other eastside city has. It's my understanding that it costs the City $400,000 a year, but again there appears to have been no effort to find a way to program activities at the park to defray these costs. Even at its current cost, that's only $4/year per resident.

As one longtime resident has pointed out, it's also possible that the removal of these stables could result in the expansion of the airport, leading to increased air traffic.

This is a disgrace.  Let's all band together to let our City leaders know that it's critical that we save this unique gem.
