Our bonds with San Mateo Elementary School in Jacksonville run deep. Both my sister and I are proud alumni of this school, attributing the heights we've reached in our educational journey to the solid foundation this institution provided us. Now, we fear this legacy of excellence is under threat. The proposed merger of our beloved San Mateo Elementary with a lower-level, non-magnet school risks compromising the quality of education and future success of current students, including our youngest sister and her peers.

San Mateo Elementary School is more than just an educational institution. Its location within our close-knit neighborhood underlines its role as a vital community center, promoting unity and safety. The proposed merger could disrupt the essence of community spirit we've enjoyed for many years.

Additionally, reports from the National Education Policy Center indicate that school closures and mergers often result in decreased student performance and increased class sizes (National Education Policy Center, 2017). We cannot let our children face such disadvantages.

Therefore, we urge the decision-makers to consider the impacts this move could have on our children's education, the spirit of our community, and the legacy of San Mateo Elementary School.
