Save Salsa Sundays at Cavaña: Preserve Our Cultural Joy and Community Connection

The Issue

To the San Francisco City Council,

We, the undersigned, are passionate supporters of Salsa Sundays at Cavaña. This event, featuring the incredible Candela Band, has become a cherished tradition that brings together a diverse community from all corners of the Bay Area, including San Francisco, the East Bay, the South Bay, and even as far as Modesto, CA.

Salsa Sundays, held from 5 PM to 8 PM, is not just a celebration of music and dance, but a vibrant expression of the cultural richness that makes the San Francisco Bay Area so special. The rooftop venue offers stunning views of the city skyline, and the warmth of the heaters, combined with the rhythmic beats of the music, creates an atmosphere that transports us to another world, filled with joy, connection, and shared experiences.

It has come to our attention that a single noise complaint has led to the cancellation of this beloved event. While we respect the concerns of all community members, we believe that a compromise can be reached. The event’s timing—early evening on a Sunday during the summer—does not interfere with typical rest hours, and we kindly ask that the complainant consider the music as a free concert, something to be enjoyed rather than opposed. For those who may not appreciate salsa music, we are more than willing to provide ear-plugs to ensure their comfort.

We would also like to point out that Cavaña’s rooftop is situated near the Giants stadium, which regularly hosts sporting events and concerts, gathering thousands of attendees. The noise levels from the ballpark far exceed anything that could be produced by the smaller, more intimate gatherings at Cavaña. Given this context, we respectfully request that the city allow us to continue enjoying our Salsa Sundays at Cavaña.

Salsa is more than just music and dance for us; it is a form of meditation, a way to counteract the mental health challenges exacerbated by the daily news of our troubled world. Salsa Sundays are a beacon of light, a source of community, and an essential part of our well-being.

We, the undersigned, ask that you please reconsider the cancellation and allow us to continue enjoying Salsa Sundays at Cavaña. Let this event remain a testament to the cultural vibrancy of our city and the joy that it brings to so many.

Thank you for considering our request.
