Rocky was a three-year-old Kangal shepherd living in Hearst, Ontario. On January 7, 2026, at 4pm he was killed by a veterinarian— a consequence of his history of biting, including one incident that resulted in the death of a small dog. Recently, during a heated argument, Rocky allegedly bit Richard's girlfriend on the chin, and she allegedly demanded: "Kill the dog or I leave."
Richard, Rocky's owner, may have been feeling pressured into this by his girlfriend.
Rocky could have gone to Safe pet, an Ontario wide organization providing foster care for all sorts of animals caught up in domestic disputes. https://www.safepet.ca/
Despite these distressing incidents, the fault lied not with Rocky, but with humans. Rocky was purchased and had remained non neutered, living without essential training in what seemed to be a toxic environment. His behavioral issues were a reflection of his fear and confusion rather than malicious intent. Please contact Kapuskasing Veterinarian and request alternatives next time. https://www.facebook.com/kapvethospital?mibextid=ZbWKwL
Rescue Resort could have started a fundraising campaign.

What makes this case particularly heartbreaking is that Rocky may have represented a pawn in what seems to be a classic case of intimate partner violence. The demand to have Rocky killed was probably being used as leverage for control within a relationship. Safe Pet can step in when these situations arise.

There was hope for Rocky. Jeffrey Baker, from Saw A Need Dog Rescue, had expressed interest in taking Rocky under his wing, offering him a chance at a new life. The only obstacle standing in the way was Richard Joel's unwillingness to pay the surrender fee required for Rocky's transfer. https://www.sandrtpc.com/
Another dog trainer wanted to help too.

Instead of an irreversible decision to end Rocky's life, we could have given him a chance to rehabilitate and thrive in a supportive environment. By finding a solution that ensures Rocky's safety, we could have turned this heartbreaking situation into one of hope and compassion.
Please show your support by signing this petition to urge the involved parties to cooperate with the rescue efforts, and save more dogs like Rocky from an undeserved fate. Your signature could be the voice the next Rocky needs today to see tomorrow.
