The issue

The Renewal Plans for Queen Victoria Market (QVM) threaten its viability as our traditional, low cost, fresh food and general merchandise market.

We are calling on the City of Melbourne to ensure that its Renewal Plans protect and prioritise Queen Victoria Market’s viability as Melbourne’s traditional, fresh food and general merchandise market, and to genuinely listen to and act on the Market community's concerns

Why it's important

Queen Victoria Market is a National Heritage-listed, working public market of unique social and cultural significance for the people of Melbourne, Victoria and Australia, and more broadly to our international visitors.

The current Renewal Plans for Queen Victoria Market are changing our Market into an entertainment/hospitality precinct.

Vic Market will no longer have the authenticity and integrity of a genuine, historic market which will result in higher prices and significant heritage loss for the community and Australia.

Currently, the City of Melbourne’s Renewal Plans:

  • constrain and downgrade Vic Market’s traditional historic function as a low-cost public market
  • reduce customers’ and traders’ access to the traditional market by removing the on-site carpark
  • downgrade the role of independent, family traders as price regulators in opposition to supermarket chains during the current cost of living crisis
  • reduce the authenticity of QVM as a significant Melbourne tourist attraction.
