WHEREAS the WCDSB has decided not to allow schools to host Prom for graduating classes or advertise Prom organized by students, and

WHEREAS Prom is a tradition for graduating students that dates back past our grandparent's era and is a major milestone in the Grade 12 student's life as they complete high school and move to post-secondary education or the workplace.

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, do petition that the Waterloo Catholic District School Board reconsider their decision, work with students to fully endorse and promote Prom for 2023, and reinstate school-run Proms in 2024 and forward.

BACKGROUND: At St. Benedict’s in particular, the school has not celebrated Proms since the start of the pandemic. In January, the school put out information to confirm they are not sponsoring or endorsing Prom. In spite of this, the Prom Committee at St. Benedict’s is actively working on providing the best Prom experience for graduating students. The event is 100% funded by students, a GoFundMe page, and sponsorship; with no funding from the school. The hall is booked and the decorations and food are on order. Without the Board’s endorsement and the ability to advertise to students, it is incredibly difficult to let 400+ students know about this landmark event and ensure that they have the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments together. After years of lockdowns and isolation, the Board’s actions are hugely disappointing and are likely to have a negative impact on the mental health of students who deserve better.
