Tower Hamlets has ordered the removal of all outdoor tables and chairs from Poyser Street, putting a thriving community of independent businesses at risk.

Poyser Street is home to a growing cluster of local favourites including Focaccia Mia, De Nadas Empanadas, La Tostadora, Rogues Sarnies, Sodo Pizza and Burnt, as well as The Vagina Museum and design studios Particle and Puck. Together, they have transformed this railway arch into a vibrant destination at the heart of Bethnal Green.

Removing outdoor seating will damage these small businesses, reduce footfall, and strip away the atmosphere that makes the street special. This comes at a time when rising costs are already putting them under pressure, including a 68.2%+ increase in Tower Hamlets’ business rates.

Al fresco dining is not a luxury — it is a lifeline for independent hospitality and a benefit to the wider community.

We call on Tower Hamlets Council to grant pavement licences for Poyser Street businesses so they can continue outdoor dining and safeguard the future of this local street. 

Without action, Poyser Street risks losing not just tables and chairs — but the livelihood of independent businesses and the community spirit that defines it.
