Save Pontiac’s Recreational Conservation Land.

Save Pontiac’s Recreational Conservation Land.
The Issue
Located in the City of Pontiac Michigan nestled between Bagley Street, Gillespie Street, historic Crystal Lake, and divided by Golf Drive lies the former Wilson Park, later Wilson Golf Course, still later Pontiac Municipal Golf Course. Similar to other Pontiac assets, like the Pontiac Silver Dome, public works site, Public Safety, and several Community Recreation Center's which were sold for pennies on the dollar by State-appointed Emergency Managers, Pontiac’s Municipal Golf Course was sold to a private investor for a mere $550,000.00. The sale included the approximately 180 acre Golf Course, Club House (with bar and grill), maintenance building, golf carts and cart storage facility. Moreover, the Course came with many longtime leagues, avid golfers and a storied history of local Golf legends. The Golf Course is now called The Links at Crystal Lake. The present owners have given every indication (last year putting TLCL on the market (Loop.net), asking 6.3 million) that they are interested in selling to developers whose mission will be to dispose of the golf course in favor of some future added residential and business developments. Why else would they ask $6.3 million for the Course when the market for Golf Courses is far less than that astronomical ask. But hold it, already, there are residential communities on each nine holes of the TLCL and these communities have been in place for almost 30 years. On the front 9 of the Course are single dwelling homes in a neighborhood called “The Fairways”; the back nine of the Course is shared by multiple dwelling, condominiums named “The Greens”. These thriving developments came about as a result of Pontiac’s planning in the early 1990’s. Presently, the Golf Course land is zoned Recreational/Conservation by the City of Pontiac Parks Master Plan. However, Pontiac’s Zoning Map indicates that the Golf Course, just like other City parks, is zoned R-1. The explanation given for this anomaly is that our parks are surrounded by R-1, single dwellings; a designation leftover from City Planners who could not foresee the future that awaited the City of Pontiac. Now, this past Zoning must be corrected, updated to protect our interests. Help us to save the Pontiac Golf Course (TLCL) by insuring that the land will remain protected as Recreational Conservation -keep GOLF at the Crystal lake in Pontiac! Please sign this Petition to stop the continued selling our City, specifically — our Golf Course. Developers are positioning themselves for the “Big Take”. Pontiac remains a prime target for developers seeking public assistance through every handout that becomes available to formerly emergency managed municipalities with all manner of financing from ARPA, Brownfield, depressed area, urban blight, etc. The vast majority of developers view opportunities to build in Pontiac as a means to pad their own pockets; they are not members of our community; and they have little desire to improve the quality of life in our City! Sign this petition to send a message to Pontiac’s Mayor, City Council, and City Planners (and to the owner of TLCL) that our community of golfers and supporters will fight to keep Pontiac as a City with a historical Golf Course at the Crystal Lake. Sign this petition now to insist that our City government remove the R-1 label from our golf course and all City parks. Sign now, before it’s too late. Let your voice be heard; sign now to protect our 18-hole golf course in Pontiac Michigan.
