Save Pirouz, the rare Asiatic Cheetah

The Issue

Dear WWF,

As you are well aware, the Asiatic cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) is a critically endangered cheetah subspecies currently only surviving in protected areas in the eastern-central arid region of Iran and probably a few of its neighboring countries in the Middle Asia such as Tajikestan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Last year, the Iranian Department of Environment estimated that only 13  Asiatic cheetahs, with only 9 known males, and 3 females, are left in Iran. And right now the  life of one of them, Pirouz, is truly endangered.

Pirouz (a Persian name  meaning Victorious ) is an Asiatic cheetah born on 1 May 2022. He is the child of two Asiatic cheetahs named "Iran" and "Firuz", Pirouz is the only surviving cub of the three. Due to a wrong critical decision, a veterinarian malpractice, Pirouz’s mother went under an unnecessary premature C-section that  jeopardized the life of the three cubs. All of them were premature and deprived of mother milk because their mother never accepted her cubs again. All three cubs were male and two of them didn't survive more than a week. Pirouz was the only surviving cub that endured renal failure caused by immaturity and bad nutrition. Despite the odds Pirouz survived and as one of the last remaining Asiatic cheetahs in the world, he has reached great popularity.

Sadly,  due to severe constipation caused by malnutrition and renal failure without proper follow- up during the last ten months Pirouz now is critically ill. He has been  transferred to Central  Hospital of Veterinary  in Tehran. The reports say that he needs some intervention for his constipation. He is not eating and is  facing renal failure, and today the hospital issued a statement saying Pirouz needs hemodialysis, however there is no proper dialysis machine in the hospital.

We are pleading to you to reach out to the hospital - the contact information is at the end of this petition- and offer them assistance and send a dialysis machine to the hospital as soon as possible. The time is of the essence. We all need to work together to save the life of this precious animal.
