Save Park Discovery's Redesign

The Issue

In 2001 Cedar City's community came together to build a park. Businesses and families donated time and money to build a park for their kids. This included unique play areas and structures loved by the community for two decades.

According to the city, due to the harsh weather the park was deemed in disrepair and unable to be insured.

Despite this Park Discovery was the second most utilized park in Cedar City. Even online it was often listed as one of the must see locations of Cedar City.

Now the park is being actively torn down. The park is not being repaired or upgraded, instead broken into pieces and tossed into a landfill. Even parts of the park that would have been easy to maintain such as the benches containing children's handprints and the wooden fence that held names of people who donated.

The city has released a render of what the new park will look like (seen on Cedar City Leisure Service's Facebook Page). This new render adds insult to injury. The new park reflects a modern image of a park, one that can be seen anywhere in Utah. There is no unique design or homage to the original park that was lovingly put together by our community.

The park was in disrepair, and is already being torn down. There is nothing that can be done about this. However, I do not wish to watch this beloved park be erased by modern day simplistic design. We deserve something better.

Citizens already voted yes to the RAP tax that will be used to pay for this construction. This is our money that will be used to create a new park. Let's demand the city show us a render worth funding before they proceeded to build a new park there. Let's demand officials listen to public comments. Let's demand something worth replacing the Park Discovery we built together and spent two decades loving.
