Save Pakenham Golf Course from Council selling off the land

Save Pakenham Golf Course from Council selling off the land
The issue
We are a collective of local golfers and friends and call ourselves 'Cardinia Golf'. (Find us on FB for updates)
We are establishing a volunteer ran, committee of management, and working on options to present to the Council to show them golf is viable, wanted and they should stand with the community, retain the course and not sell the land off for houses.
The Pakenham Golf Course has been a cornerstone of community recreation in the booming Cardinia Shire community for many years. It is a vital green space for residents to exercise, socialize, and enjoy nature, and so many stories about graduations, 18ths, 21st and weddings onsite over generations.
For Pakenham, and the growing wider Cardinia, Southeast Melbourne and West Gippsland communities, this course is more than just space to play golf.
The land was donated by local farming families in the 1970s, families who still farm locally, to the Council with the condition it was to be kept as vital open space. Since then, an 18 hole course, with a driving range, has been enjoyed by many. In 2018 the Shire and state government invested big, spending $12 million dollars to create an award winning function centre alongside the Golf Course, complete with a cafe, multiple community rooms for hire, a first class restaurant and kitchen facility. There is also an award winning all-abilities playground and changing places toilet for first class all abilities inclusion.
However, early 2025, the contracted Golf Managers Contract was ended.
Cardinia Shire was silent.
Cardinia Shire Council has confirmed no intention to retender or support golf at the site.
Cardinia staff instead promising 3 different reports are coming - and for what?
Cardinia Shire Council rumored to be selling land to developer for money.
We call upon Cardinia Shire Council, to
- Re-tender for a company to look after the golf course
- Be honest and upfront to the community
We cannot afford to lose the Golf and the wonderful facility where family and friends to come together, promoting not just physical health but also mental well-being. The scenic landscapes, the fresh air, and the camaraderie found here are unmatched.
In an era where public recreational spaces are shrinking, the golf course provides an essential area for physical activities, helping to combat obesity, reduce stress, and improve cardiovascular health. Statistics show that communities with local parks and recreational facilities have lower healthcare costs and a better quality of life. The Pakenham Golf Course isn't just a luxury—it's a community necessity.
Transforming this beloved course into something else could have detrimental effects on our community, depriving us of a crucial space for health and socializing.
We propose that Cardinia Shire Council recognizes the value the golf course brings to our community, both in economic terms by attracting visitors and in enhancing the well-being of its residents. By conserving this space, the Council would be investing in the long-term health and happiness of the Cardinia Shire population.
Support our mission to keep the Pakenham Golf Course operational and thriving. By signing this petition, you're advocating for a healthier future for our community and preserving the spirit of communal cohesion and wellness that this golf course embodies. Please sign and help save one of our community's most cherished assets.
