The Issue

Every day, I work at a local convenience store in Wingate, NC, knowing the safety and reassurance provided by our dedicated Wingate Police Department. The thought of losing this department is unsettling, not just for me, but for all local businesses and residents who rely on swift, familiar, and dedicated services.

Recently, there's been a consideration to dissolve our local Wingate Police Department and enter a contract with the Union County Sheriff’s Office. Such a move might seem practical on paper, but it overlooks the unique needs and dynamics of our town. Our Wingate officers are more than just law enforcers; they are our neighbors, friends, and a vital part of our community infrastructure, understanding the local concerns better than an external entity ever could.

Transferring responsibilities to the Union County Sheriff's Office could stretch resources thin, as Wingate would become another area among many in their jurisdiction, potentially leading to delayed response times, unfamiliar officers, and less personalized community policing.

A well-monitored study by the Department of Justice highlights that towns maintaining their local police services have a better grasp on crime control and community trust. According to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, community-oriented policing plays a significant role in reducing crime rates while promoting mutual trust and respect between law enforcement and residents.

Yes, budget constraints and fiscal responsibilities are real concerns. However, cost-cutting should not come at the expense of our community's safety and welfare. Instead of dissolving our police department, let's explore other budgetary solutions or strategic partnerships that retain the essence of our security while addressing financial challenges.

Please join me in urging the town council and decision-makers of Wingate, NC to keep our local police department intact and reject any contractual agreements with the Union County Sheriffs. For the safety, familiarity, and future of our town, it's imperative we stand together.

Sign this petition to preserve the safety, unity, and personalized policing that Wingate, NC deserves. Together, we can make a difference.
