The council has launched an online consultation on the future of the city's libraries, which will run until Friday 10 October, whether you are a library customer or not. This is our chance to together firmly tell the council we will not accept library closures.
The proposed changes to library services in Brighton & Hove include:
· Closing Hollingbury, Rottingdean and Westdene libraries
· Reducing the opening hours of Jubilee Library by 2 hours on Monday evenings and by 3 hours on Sunday afternoons
· Reducing the opening hours of Hove Library by 2 hours on Wednesday evenings and by 3 hours on Saturday afternoons.
There are many alternatives. Now is the time to make it clear we will not accept ANY closures of reductions to library opening hours. The council could very easily reign in their own book fund. They currently spend over DOUBLE what any other council does per 1,000 residents on books. Even spending 150% more than anyone else would still make over £125,000 savings per year they say they require. Closing any of our libraries is a purely political decision - it is not neccesary.
