URGENT: Whittier City Council plans to take action at their meeting this Tuesday, Oct. 28 to change the City law that protects our trees! Please object by immediately sending an email to ccd@cityofwhittier.org. If possible, join others opposing this action by attending Tuesday’s meeting starting at 6pm at City Hall.
BACKGROUND: This Tuesday the City Council is planning to declare an “urgent emergency” based on their legal settlement payout of a sidewalk trip and fall accident that occurred in 2018! Other cities maintain their trees AND sidewalks. Now the Whittier City Council wants to “suspend” the City’s Tree Manual ordinance so that they can speed up chopping down our trees. The Tree Manual already allows the City to immediately remove any diseased or dangerous trees as assessed by their arborist. The proposed new ordinance would delegate authority to the City Manager to remove ANY trees with no resident appeal process allowed.
We are reaching out to you and all the 7,370+ people who signed the petition To Save Our Trees in Whittier. The timing of placing this “urgency” ordinance on Tuesday’s agenda is suspect for another reason. The Whittier Conservancy’s lawsuit seeking to prevent the City’s plan to remove ALL of the existing trees on Greenleaf Ave in the heart of Uptown is set for trial on Feb. 20, less than two months before the City Council election on April 14, 2026. Will there be any Greenleaf Ave trees to save by Feb. 20? To learn more or to contact us, please go to www.saveourtreeswhittier.com
