Save our Tree! Delay the Removal! Rockridge (Golden Gate/Acacia)
The Issue
URGENT:
City of Oakland: Please delay the scheduled removal of this iconic tree until alternatives are explored
Background:
The City of Oakland is scheduled to remove our neighborhood tree at the intersection of Golden Gate Avenue and Acacia on November 7.
This lone tree is in its own "island" in the middle of a very large intersection. It has been here for a long time and survived the firestorm of 1991. Aside from it being a landmark for the general area, many who survived the fire and rebuilt see it as a symbol of resilience and rebirth.
Here it is after the 1991 firestorm

Here it is today!

Per the tree trimmers that showed up on MON Oct 31 (ahead of schedule), the tree is diseased and weak and they plan to cut it to a 8 foot tall trunk.
We do not see an unhealthy tree, though it definitely could use pruning.
Request:
1) City of Oakland: Please share the arborist's report on tree condition that is prompting removal
2) Delay the removal of tree pending review of all arborists' reports
3) Allow us time to get an independent arborist's evaluation.
4) Public Meeting with city officials to review findings and discuss options.
Thank you for supporting our neighborhood landmark!
