Save our Transgender youth from discrimination
The Issue
At the last Norfolk Public Schools board meeting, they made a decision that Transgender individuals will be put into sports teams that correlate with the gender they were assigned at birth.
If this change is made, there will be so many individuals who will be too scared to join sports in fear of getting made fun of or feeling under-appreciated in the work that they would do for the team.
You may not see this as a big deal, but it truly is. Think of it as if you were forced to use the same changing rooms as people of the opposite sex. Wouldn’t that make you uncomfortable?
That is what they are trying to do to our Transgender students in the Norfolk Public Schools district. Make it so that they aren’t validated in a sport that they are passionate about. That just isn’t right.
Being in a sport of the opposite gender can make these Transgender individuals feel very out of place and unwelcome in their surroundings. We should firmly believe that for anyone, no matter their gender identity, it should be a given that they get the respect they deserve.
As a school that is meant to be all-inclusive and a safe space for everyone, it seems a bit hypocritical of them to do something like this. Everyone should be able to feel comfortable and validated in their own skin.
I am a Sophmore at Norfolk High who also happens to be Queer. I have faced some discrimination of my own from my peers, but that is nothing compared to what these individuals are facing right now. I cannot live with the fact that if this rule stays in place, not just my generation, but the rest to come will have to deal with this discrimination. So I am trying to do everything I can to help fight for Transgender students and their rights to join the same sports team that correlates with their gender, not the one they were born with.
A video attached is of four students from Norfolk High who wrote a slam poem about being Transgender and a look inside their minds and life. It’s truly amazing to watch, gives me goosebumps every time. Check it out!
