According to counter devices installed by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) throughout the city, (https://tinyurl.com/3bj9k8jx in the past year cycling is down in North Sydney by 33% while walking has increased 27%. TfNSW’s monitoring of cyclists on the Sydney Harbour Bridge at Dawes Point reveals that an average of only 590 individual cyclists use the bridge each day.
And yet, TfNSW is about to spend $100 million* or $170,000 PER CYCLIST, for a new Linear Ramp at Milsons Point that will destroy parkland and Bridge Heritage. This doesn’t make sense especially as we face a state budget crisis.
The Community Cycle Ramp (facebook.com/groups/cycleramp), a cheaper and safer alternative was proposed and supported by over 8,000 community stakeholders (https://chng.it/BQCzQpVkvQ This ramp did no parkland or heritage harm but unbelievably, government ministers and Transport for NSW officials refused to even meet with these community representatives despite repeated requests.
Is this the best way for the government to spend our taxpayers’ dollars in a budget crisis? $100 million would go a long way towards building new schools and hospitals and would support the hiring of badly needed nurses and teachers in NSW. This is wasteful and irresponsible spending and should be brought to the attention of the Treasurer of NSW, Daniel Mookhey.
