We are writing to inform you of the latest developments regarding The Sir Winston Churchill tree, which has been at the centre of significant concern within our community.
Despite our best efforts to work with Bellway and Leicestershire County Council to explore alternative solutions that would preserve the tree, we regret to inform you that the developers have decided to proceed with its removal. This decision comes despite the substantial cost involved and the various alternatives proposed by the community to preserve this historic tree.
While this outcome is disappointing for all those who value the tree's cultural and environmental significance, we are taking steps to ensure that its legacy continues. We have successfully taken a couple of saplings from the tree, which we hope to plant within the development, symbolising the spirit of the tree in its new surroundings.
In addition, we are actively engaging with Bellway and Leicestershire County Council to explore the possibility of securing the wood from the tree to create a commemorative carving. This carving would serve as a lasting tribute to the tree's importance and would be installed in a central location within the village for future generations to appreciate.
We remain hopeful that Bellway will support this initiative and allow us to create a monument that honours the history of the tree and its place in Cossington's heritage. We are committed to working with all parties to ensure that the memory of The Sir Winston Churchill tree is preserved in a meaningful and respectful way.
We will continue to update you on any further progress and would like to thank the community for its ongoing support in this effort.
Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions or suggestions.
