Save our Sikh Schools

The Issue

On the 1st of August, 2023 the Delhi High Court has ordered the Directorate of Education, Delhi Government to either appoint an Administrator or to derecognise the schools.

Either action will result in our community losing our schools. They will seize to exist! The land they are built on is owned by the DDA and will be taken back by then.

Two out of the 12 schools have already been closed. We need to act now.

Sign this petition to ask the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee to handover our schools to Professional Educationalists from our community.

Why we should be concerned?

Once the crown jewels of Sikh schooling, the Guru Harkrishan Public Schools were providing our children with a great education along with an immersive environment for them to grow up in, with the Sikh philosophy and the Punjabi language. Without this immersion, our children will grow apart from our Guru's core teachings. Prospering of our Guru's philosophy is not just important for our community but is becoming increasingly relevant in a world full of polarization and division. The world used to & still see Sikhs as their North Star, so how can we lose this credibility? What will we answer to our future generations? If these schools cease to exist, it would be a huge setback to our community and to the world at large.

What is the way forward?

Our Guru gave the sangat the power to challenge world order. Today we must stand together to steer our own community and leaders in the right direction.

Step1: It is imperative that we come together to convince the management committee to hand over, with complete autonomy, the running of the schools to professional educators from our community, who will create detailed KPIs to govern it. Let us give them time and full autonomy to turn our schools around. They should be parallelly answerable to sangat in a very transparent manner. It is clear that the current process in these schools is broken. This handover is a necessary step if we want the quality of education to improve.

Step 2: We work with Directorate of Education to balance the books in individual schools through fee increases so that the schools break even going forward. This of course can only happen with the quality of education improving within the schools.

Step 3: We must work with the Prabandhak committee and all opposition parties to find a way to pay what is due to the teachers.
