National Wildlife Day: Thank you for standing up for our reds 🐿️

Today is National Wildlife Day, a day to celebrate the extraordinary wildlife with which we share these islands, but also to remember just how much of it needs our protection.

For Save Our Reds, it comes just days after the People’s Red Squirrel Banknote Collection closed.

And what a response!

Several hundred entries arrived: paintings, photographs, drawings, sculpture, children’s artwork and red squirrels with every conceivable kind of character.

We’re trying to thank as many of you personally as we can over the coming days, while also adding the final selection of entries to our online Collection:

Then we’ll be sending the Collection, by red squirrel post, of course, to the Bank of England.

Behind all that wonderful creativity is a serious purpose. Britain’s red squirrels are endangered, their range has contracted dramatically and the populations that remain continue to face enormous pressures.

The Collection has shown us something very powerfully: people care about our red squirrels, and they do not want to lose them.

And today we have another milestone tantalisingly close.

The petition that started Save Our Reds is now just 70 voices short of a staggering 110,000 signatures.

Can we find those 70 people on National Wildlife Day?

For our reds, and for all our endangered Red Listed species, please share the petition and help us reach 110,000.

Celebrating our wildlife matters. Protecting its future matters even more.
