Today is the first national Save Our Reds Day, and it falls on Endangered Species Day for a reason.

There is still no clear, coordinated UK-wide plan to save our red squirrels from extinction.

Once widespread across Britain, our native reds are now confined to fragments of surviving woodland. Habitat loss continues. Protections remain weak. And without urgent action, they could disappear from mainland England within around 25 years, with populations across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland increasingly under threat.

We cannot keep managing decline while one of Britain's most loved native mammals vanishes in real time.
