Following national coverage on Sky News last night, the reality is finally being recognised.
This is a UK-wide issue.

This simple interactive map shows the long-term decline of red squirrels – and what happens if nothing changes.
It is stark. It is the truth.
Once counted in their millions, there are now just 140,000–160,000 red squirrels left across the UK, with as few as 15,000 in England.
Meanwhile, there are an estimated 2.7 million grey squirrels.
Red squirrels are now classified as Endangered in England and Wales.
Grey squirrels outcompete reds and carry squirrelpox, which is fatal to reds. Habitat loss continues alongside.
This is not theoretical.
Without action, we will lose our red squirrels.
We need a joined-up national plan:
- Coordinated, properly funded ranger capacity on the ground
- Humane management of grey squirrels
- Urgent investment in a squirrelpox vaccine
- Protection and enforcement of habitat
At the moment, these efforts are fragmented.
Otherwise, we are simply managing decline.
