The Issue

AI is reshaping our world. Let's make sure it's built with our planet and our communities in mind.

AI runs on data centers, and they need a lot of electricity and water. Data centers used about 4.4% of all US electricity in 2023, and that could climb to as much as 12% by 2028. (US Department of Energy)

Communities are noticing. In a new national survey, 63% of registered voters said they'd oppose an AI data center within 10 miles of their home. (CNBC) In just the first three months of 2026, local opposition blocked or delayed about 75 projects worth roughly $130 billion. (Data Center Watch) And some towns only learned who was behind a project after officials had signed secrecy agreements. (Wisconsin Watch)

Here's the good news: public pressure is working.

When we started this petition in February 2025, we asked OpenAI to commit to sustainable AI infrastructure. Since then, the biggest AI companies have started making promises:

  • Microsoft pledged its data centers won't raise household electricity prices, and to replenish more water than it uses. (Jan 2026)
  • OpenAI pledged to "pay its own way on energy" at its Stargate sites. (Jan 2026)
  • Anthropic pledged to cover the full cost of its data centers' electricity and grid upgrades. (Feb 2026)
  • Google pledged to replenish more water than its data centers use by 2030, and to report its water use every year. (June 2026)
  • Amazon pledged to stop requiring secrecy agreements with local governments, and to publish yearly energy and water data. (Oct 2026)

These are real steps. But every company's promise is different, most live in blog posts, and there's still no common standard for reporting AI's energy and water use. (Axios) A promise you can't check isn't the same as a commitment.

We're asking every major AI company building data centers to commit to one clear standard:

✅ Show the numbers. Publish the electricity use, water use, and clean-energy share of every data center, every year, in a common format that's independently verified.

✅ Pay your own way, in writing. Cover the full cost of power and grid upgrades through utility agreements, so families never see higher bills because of AI.

✅ Commit to clean energy with real dates. Add new clean power to the grid to match what you use, with yearly milestones.

✅ Put communities first. No secrecy agreements with public officials, real public input before projects are approved, and community benefit agreements made public.

Disclosure is already possible. Starting in November 2026, California requires large companies doing business in the state to report their greenhouse gas emissions. (Insurance Journal) We're asking AI companies to go further, everywhere, on their own.

We use AI every day. We also believe it should be built with our planet, our communities, and our kids' future in mind. Both can be true.
