Save our nests!
The Issue
Canadian Wildlife Service plans to demolish more swallows’ nesting areas at Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area! (Ian Barker photo)
There has been no other structure built to accommodate the birds once their nesting area is destroyed. This is against their own (CWS) mandate which reads: "Our mission is to achieve nature conservation outcomes for habitat, wildlife and their ecosystems, particularly migratory birds and species at risk." Feb 1, 2023 (Google search Feb 25, 2024)
“Barn Swallows are a species-at-risk categorized as ‘Threatened’ federally and ‘Special Concern’ in Ontario,” says Anderson, citizen scientist and a member of all the County’s nature organizations including the SSJI South Shore Joint Initiative. “Demolishing the shed means the loss of habitat for up to 70 Barn Swallows. Barn Swallows may hatch as many as 10 young in a season with two broods.” (text from County Live) (Photos by Ian Barker)
Let your voices be heard: sign the petition-it will got to Minister Gilbeault email: ministre-minister@ec.gc.ca to have him "Save the Barn Swallows" nesting shed in the PEP NWA. Time is very short-demolition may begin as soon as February 26.
