“Do let me know how I can best help – short of puncturing the tyres of the truck nominated to tow the mobile library away!”
He explained to me his affection for Devon and the importance of libraries which he says “are seen as a soft option but there’s a long term aspect that isn’t appreciated.”
I think you will all enjoy this story of his visit to an Exeter bookshop back in 1989…
“My parents lived in Devon for many years (Cheriton Bishop) and I have a very soft soft-spot for the county. When my first book was published in 1989, I was on a visit to my parents’ house. My mum was very excited that she’d found a copy of my book in an Exeter bookshop (Pitts). I high-tailed it into Exeter to see this Great Thing that had come to pass. Indeed I found a copy on one of the shelves. I slid it out and gazed at the book. My book. On a shelf in a bookshop. My reverie was interrupted by the manager. “May I help you?” I explained that I was just pleased to see that they had a copy of my book in stock. He turned away and headed back to the counter.
I was about to replace the book when a thought struck me. I took the book over to the counter and said, “Would you like me to sign it for you.” “No thank you,” came the reply. “We can’t send it back if it’s signed…”
