Save Our Libraries!

Save Our Libraries!
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of Allegany County, are writing to express our strong opposition to any proposed closure of the Allegany County Libraries (Washington Street, George’s Creek, Westernport). These libraries are essential resources for the children, families, and residents of our community, and their closure would have a profound negative impact on the well-being and future of our area.
Our libraries provide invaluable services, including educational programs, access to books, technology, and a safe space for learning and community engagement. For many of us, these libraries are not just buildings—they are pillars of our community, supporting literacy, lifelong learning, and social connection.
As parents, students, and community members, we rely on these libraries to provide access to critical resources and opportunities that many individuals would not have otherwise. These libraries are particularly crucial in the more remote, westernmost areas of Allegany County, where access to such resources is limited. The loss of these libraries would exacerbate disparities in educational access and opportunities for those who need them most.
We implore the County Commissioners to reconsider any plans to close these libraries and instead prioritize funding to maintain and enhance these vital services. Rather than reducing services to the most vulnerable populations, we urge you to seek innovative solutions to address budget deficits that do not come at the expense of our community’s educational and cultural well-being.
Our libraries are not just buildings—they are lifelines. Closing them would be a disservice to our children, families, and neighbors. We ask for your support in keeping these essential community resources open and accessible to all.
We, the undersigned, stand united in our call to preserve these libraries.
