The Issue

Imagine your child successfully completing UKG, fully ready for Class 1, only to be told they must repeat the entire year because their birthday falls in June or July. Because the government is strictly enforcing a "6 years by June 1st" cutoff, thousands of children in Karnataka are facing a lost academic year over a margin of just a few days or weeks.

Our Ask:
We urgently request the Karnataka Education Department to issue an official circular granting a minimum 60-day age relaxation (extending the eligibility cutoff to July 31st) for Class 1 admissions for the upcoming academic year 2027-28.

Decision Makers: Shri Madhu Bangarappa (Minister for School Education & Literacy, Karnataka), Commissioner for Public Instruction

Why This Matters (The Ground Reality): Unfair "Mid-Stream" Rule Change: Our children began their preschool journey (Nursery/LKG) before the state government began strictly enforcing this age rule. They have successfully mastered the UKG curriculum. Forcing a child to sit in the same classroom for another year, learning what they already know, will cause severe demotivation. A child's educational progress shouldn't be penalized by a retroactive technicality.

Crushing Financial Burden: Forcing a repetition of UKG imposes a severe financial penalty on middle-class parents. Families are being forced to pay an additional ₹3 Lakh to ₹4 Lakhs in pre-primary school fees for a repeated year that offers zero new educational value to the child.

Government Precedent Exists: The Karnataka Government recognized this exact transitional hardship last year. For the current 2026-27 academic year, a 60-day relaxation was officially granted following parent appeals. Denying this exact same transitional grace period to the upcoming batch creates a glaring disparity.

National Realities: While the National Education Policy (NEP) suggests a 6-year baseline, several progressive states utilize a December 31st benchmark to ensure children born in the monsoon months are not left behind.

Call to Action: This one-time grandfathering will allow children currently in UKG to transition smoothly to Class 1, saving thousands of students from an unnecessary lost year and protecting parents from unwarranted financial distress.
