The Issue
Why Destroy a building worth $600 to $800 MILLION that can generate $50 to $100 million in annual income to lower City of Calgary Taxes?
The Iconic heritage building known as the Calgary Saddledome is scheduled for demolition immediately after the building of a newer Stadium is completed. This new Stadium costs over $1.2 BILLION of which THE ENTIRE BUILDING COSTS & the land is supplied by taxpayers of Calgary (loan repayment of some ~$300 million by CSEC). Add in the cost of losing a perfectly good income generating building makes the cost of a New Stadium over $2 BILLION dollars.
Plus, losses of tens of millions
in annual income in lease revenues...
There is no income from lease or ticket sales to lower taxes to Calgarians. The New Stadium will have more luxury booths (For the Elite and Wealthy) with prime viewing which means 1000 less seats than the old Saddledome has. We know this means fewer good seats & more cheaper nosebleed seats at a higher cost for the majority of us than it would cost in the Saddledome.
Is the contract valid for the New Stadium Lease? Was the Lease put out for public tender as would be required under the bylaws of the City of Calgary as I was informed by the City of Calgary when looking to lease Public owned Golf Courses? This contract with CSEC might actually be illegally obtained under false information presented to voters and taxpayers? A lawyer, independent lawyer, should check into the validity of the contract.
The wealthy suite users will have their own kitchens, services and nice clean washrooms. No lines to wait in. No need to use the public PEON washrooms. No hub nubbin with the poor required.
All paid for by Taxpayers...with higher taxes.
The New Stadium should be built but under legitimate contracts generating money for the investor...you the taxpayer.
The owner CSEC will not likely be giving you anymore Concerts. Simply put. CSEC gets 100% of the income from prime-time sporting event bookings. The bulk of their income profits of ~$200 million annually. They will not give up Prime sporting event booking times for Concerts that give them 10 to 20% return on a booking...losing 80% of the income.
Calgary is a small market venue for Concerts in North America. Edmonton is double or triple the market size. Simple math. And the Saddledome never brought more concerts to equal Edmonton Concerts like promoted in 1983.
The only way Calgarians get more Concerts and Events is to put the Saddledome lease contract up for open Tender. Saddledome Competition to the New Stadium will also make it more affordable to attend. While lowering your tax obligations to the City coffers.

The Saddledome can be re-purposed, upgraded cheaply compared to an entirely new building ($100 million upgrade makes the Saddledome meaningful)) and can be used to hold many economic events. The structure has been historic to the City of Calgary since it was built in 1983. Paid for by 1/3 Alberta Government, 1/3 Federal government and 1/3 City of Calgary taxpayers.
* The 1988 Olympics held hockey & figure skating events within.
- The Calgary Flames won their only Stanley Cup in 1989 in the building.
- The iconic building is the symbol of the Greatest outdoor show in Canada, The Calgary Stampede.
- The view from Scotsman's Hill is a heritage and Iconic view representing our past, present and future image of the West & Calgary tying the three important Calgary sites into a Heritage site for Albertans.
- The Saddledome is a one-of-a-kind building in the world that symbolizes all Calgary has been & is recognized around the world.
- We need to protect these important sites from those that wish them destroyed so the image of Calgary is changed forever from our Western Roots.
Calgary & Alberta is symbolized by the settling of the West by use of the saddle. The Stampede was a key attraction since it opened & the addition of the Saddledome makes the attraction more unique & memorable.
The Saddledome sits on Traditional Native Lands of Treaty 7. Symbolizing the horse and its impact on the West. The First Nations Pavilion is now tied into the view of the Saddledome. To discard the symbol of the West is disregarding our history by a City of Calgary Counsel & Mayor with limited ties to our History and Culture of the West.
Along with Scotsman's Hill and its spectacular views makes the entire area a Historic site. A true heritage site for future generations of Calgarians and Albertans to remember the co-operation of all to make Calgary a great City to live. This amazing picture has captivated people from all over the world to visit Calgary. Our cultural history shows the growth of the Stampede and Calgary having input from various cultures to build a famous image of the history of Calgary & Alberta for the world to see. Without the First Nations major contributions to the Calgary Stampede the event would not have been as big a world attraction. Without the Scottish we would not have the Masons and Scotsman's Hill.
This is why it is so important to preserve our Heritage Sites and Culture attached to these sites.
We need your help in signing this petition to ensure the Iconic Saddledome is not demolished by the Mayor and City Council that doesn't see the significance of the History, Culture & Heritage of Calgary. The Saddledome is the symbol of Calgary, The Calgary Stampede & the settlement of the West. It represents all of Alberta Heritage and history.
WE THE UNDERSIGNED DEMAND THE CITY OF CALGARY, THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DESIGNATE THE CALGARY SADDLEDOME AS A HISTORIC SITE AND ICONIC BUILDING AND STOP THE DEMOLITION OF THE CULTURAL HERITGAE BUILDING.
WE FURTHER DEMAND VIA THIS PETITION THAT THE LEASE FOR THE SADDLEDOME BE PUT UP FOR PUBLIC TENDER.
WE DEMAND PROPER INCOME FORMTHE NEW STADUIM IN THE FORM OF A 10% TO 20% SURCHARGE ON TICKETS TO ANY AND ALL EVENTS HELD THERE FOR THE SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT OF TAXPAYERS MONEY TO BUILD THE STADIUM. AND IF THE LEASE FOR THE NEW STADIUM WAS NOT PUT UP FOR PUBLIC TENDER, WE DEMAND THAT THE LEASE OF THE SAID BUILDING AND SERVICES BE PUT UP FOR PUBLIC TENDER IN ACCORDANCE TOTHE BEST INTERESTS OF TAXPAYERS.
