Save Our Greenwich Village Supermarket

Save Our Greenwich Village Supermarket
The Issue
We, the undersigned, reside in the vicinity of the Morton Williams supermarket at 130 Bleecker Street. We have organized SOS - Save our Supermarket – an ad hoc, grass roots committee to call upon our City government and our elected officials to take all necessary steps to assure that the full-service supermarket continues without interruption to operate at its current location or elsewhere on the superblock or in the immediate vicinity.
A supermarket has functioned continuously at its current location for over fifty years. Morton Williams now remains the only full-service supermarket in the area, serving over 23,000 residents in its zip code alone.
Morton Williams provides a 24-hour essential service, including affordable hot meals to all residents, especially to the elderly and to persons with special needs. Morton Williams has remained open during times of crisis, such as the pandemic and devastating storms.
We support the creation in our community of a new public school to serve students with special learning needs, but remain confident that the City can create a school without supermarket dislocation.
We also call upon the City to assure the continuation without dislocation of the vital abutting award-winning LaGuardia Corner Community Gardens, at a time when we recognize the critical nature of such green garden space.
We further call upon New York University, which benefitted from zoning changes, to live up to the commitment NYU made during that rezoning process to ensure the supermarket's continuation on the Superblock. We call upon NYU to do so by facilitating the location of either the supermarket or school on its grounds, which would best serve university faculty and students, as well as the needs of our diverse community.
