Save our greenbelt sites in North Somerset

The Issue

Green Belt designation is one of the only ways we can protect wildlife habitats, create resilient ecosystems and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

In a recent unsolicited lobbying email to North Somerset Councillors a property developer consultant claimed those of us who spoke out about saving our greenbelt were a vocal minority and should therefore be ignored. We know that’s not the case so let’s prove him wrong!

This petition is for North Somerset Council to protect all greenbelt sites from development in their next local plan. This has already been agreed upon in an executive meeting but we are worried some councillors are getting cold feet. This will hopefully show that there’s lots of support for saving our nature rich greenbelt sites.

Some people have been told their greenbelt sites will be saved if we allow the 5,000 home development on Greenbelt land around Yanley but that’s just not true. The delivery test that opens the council up to speculative development is based on delivery of homes not allocations or planning permissions granted. The only way to prevent that is to stick together and fight the unrealistic targets as a team.

If we start throwing greenbelt sites under the bus we will lose all of our previous nature spaces. It’s just a matter of time. Don’t let the developers divide and conquer!

Sign this to send a message to North Somerset Council that we want to keep our green spaces out of the local plan!
