The Wichita City Council has referred re-zoning of Delano Green Space back to the District 6 District Advisory Board (DAB) for reconsideration. The DAB will hear the protest to the application at their Monday, September 12 meeting. The City Council will take up the issue again on September 20.
NAI Martens, real estate developer, made the rezoning application in order to build apartments. The land is owned by the City of Wichita, but the developer is buying the property from the City if the rezoning application is approved. The issue went to the City Council in July after near-by property owners filed protest petitions. In July, the Council deferred action until their August 2 meeting. The Council voted to send the issue back to the DAB for reconsideration, the DAB had previously recommended approval of the re-zoning, but citizens had not had time to mount effective opposition at the time the DAB meeting was held in June.
Here's how you can help:
- Share this petition, we now have more than 700 signatures. Our steering committee has decided we have a goal now of 1000. The petition and signatures will be presented to the City Council before the meeting September 20 and we will inform the DAB of our support on September 12.
- Email the Mayor and Members of the City Council. Tell them to reject the rezoning application and make the green space a 'pocket park'. (Delano is a low-income community and is 'under parked' and has little green space. On top that, for the past 13 years we've been losing our tree canopy to age and disease and the City is not replacing trees it is removing). - Attend the 6 District DAB meeting on September 12 at 6:30PM, Evergreen Library and Community Center. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early. Please sign in with North Delano Neighbors.
Thanks for everything you do. Take care,
