Save our county owned ambulance service from privatization
The Issue
For years, I've been a staunch advocate for our public safety responders in Pulaski County, Indiana. These dedicated individuals work tirelessly, often putting their own lives at risk to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. Ensuring that first responders come home safe is not just a professional concern for me; it's deeply personal.
The current proposal to privatize our county-owned ambulance service threatens not only the livelihoods of those who serve but also the quality and accessibility of emergency medical services that our community relies upon. The county-owned service has been a cornerstone of public safety, staffed by local professionals who understand the unique needs of our area and are committed to putting the health of residents above profit.
Privatization often leads to increased costs for residents and a reduction in service quality. This is supported by studies from regions where similar measures were taken. The National Institute of Emergency Medical Services found that private EMS services can lead to a compromise in service quality, attributable to financial pressures that prioritize profitability over patient care.
Moreover, local control of such crucial services allows for greater accountability and transparency. Our current county-run system provides a level of oversight and community involvement that is often lost when services are outsourced to external companies. We risk losing critical input from local residents and frontline workers who have firsthand experience of what our community needs.
With the pressure of privatization looming, we face a crucial decision: to stand by our public servants and ensure our EMS remains a fully functional, community-controlled, equitable system that maintains our safety standards and our values or to allow it to be overtaken by private interests.
