Save Our $9B Beach Tourism: Preserve 4WD Access, Police the Reckless!

The issue

The Issue: Collective Punishment vs. Real Accountability

Calls for a blanket ban on 4WDs on Queensland beaches (like Bribie Island, K'gari/Fraser, and Cooloola) are growing. This proposal is a failure of policy: it chooses collective punishment over effective enforcement.

The environmental damage is real, but it is caused by a small, reckless minority of hoons—not the thousands of responsible drivers who respect the environment and sustain our drive-tourism economy.

Banning legal, safe recreational 4WDing:

  1. Punishes the Law-Abiding Majority: It unfairly targets families and enthusiasts who meticulously follow rules and value the coast.
  2. Threatens the Economy: It jeopardizes the $9 billion contribution drive tourism makes to regional Queensland.
  3. Fails to Deter Criminals: Hoons will simply move to the next accessible location or ignore the ban entirely.

Our Demand: Policy, Enforcement, and Education

We urge the Queensland Government and Minister for Parks to reject a total ban and immediately implement a powerful three-pillar strategy to truly protect the environment and preserve public access:

  1. Stronger, Visible Enforcement: Commit to highly visible police and ranger patrols in all known hotspots to catch hoons in the act.
  2. Increased Penalties & Accountability: Introduce non-negotiable penalties for severe offenses, including mandatory vehicle seizure and permanent lifetime permit bans for repeat offenders.
  3. Mandatory Education: Make a short, conservation-focused driver education module compulsory for all beach permit applicants to reinforce environmental stewardship.

We are ready to be part of the solution. We demand that permit revenue be transparently reinvested into dedicated enforcement and conservation. Don't ban the many; police the few.
