Let’s show them that we will not stand for their tyranny – together. Thanks to him, soon, all natural, safe, holistic practitioners and spiritual care workers will have to tell you that they cannot treat, or even actively listen to you talk about, your health without risking a year in jail and a fine of $25,000 for a first ‘offence’. ‘Active listening’ is a controlled psychotherapy technique that only his favored groups can offer, even if we pay out-of-pocket for the service! The Issue The controlled act of psychotherapy that outlawed holistic services across Ontario and that removed our freedom of choice, places all Ontarians in grave danger. This legislation is nothing less than an attack on our health and well-being and an end to our personal liberties and medical autonomy. No wonder the architects of this travesty had to hide their dirty deeds in huge Omnibus Bills in 2007 and 2009 so that the public and the MPPs voting on these Bills would be kept in the dark about this new legislation. Not only that, but the Ministry of Health’s own Advisors had told the then Minister way back in 2006 that the controlled act of psychotherapy was not viable. The Minister was warned by lawyers and Mental Health Professional groups that this would put all other practitioners out of their livelihoods. Minister of Health, Dr. Eric Hoskins’s Failure of Duty The current Minister of Health, Dr. Eric Hoskins, still insists that the only stakeholders in this situation are his 6 favoured groups that focus, or will soon be forced to focus, on medical/pharmaceutical approaches: MDs/psychiatrists, psychologists, registered psychotherapists, nurses, occupational therapists and social workers. These are the only groups he is allowing to be consulted on a matter that affects each and every Ontario resident--the 14th controlled act of psychotherapy. Dr. Hoskins is engaged in major conflicts of interest, bias, failure of duty of care and failure to protect democratic rights and personal liberties of all Ontarians. He has the ability to repeal this legislation, but refuses to even discuss it, let alone repeal it. Dr. Hoskins also recently gave Naturopaths drug prescribing rights and is eliminating their right to order lab tests. Bye-bye natural treatments, hello more killer drugs. This despite the latest studies showing that more heroin addicts are created by medical doctors then by street drug pushers! This legislation that Dr. Hoskins refuses to discuss eliminates all healthcare choices and freedoms of conversation about health and wellness, even preventive treatments, in total violation of our Constitutional rights and freedoms and Supreme Court decisions confirming that medical autonomy is a right. The Constitution mandates all legislators to act in good faith. They have an obligation to ensure that when personal liberties are curtailed, let alone eliminated altogether, that they provide substantial evidence that this is actually required for the benefit of society. The Minister has not and cannot provide any justification for this imposition on our lives, livelihoods, freedoms of conversation and association and basic human rights. Instead, the Minister of Health has: (a) refused to acknowledge and consider two extensive research studies into the safety of natural treatments and the fact that they require no regulation whatever. (c) refused to provide the proof that the medical/pharmaceutical groups are safe and that natural therapies are not and should be ‘regulated’ by the most dangerous health professionals on the planet – psychologists and psychiatrists (psychotherapy is merely a branch of psychology which is already regulated under Ontario’s Psychology Act!).
