The Issue

Glastonbury is our home, a vibrant town bustling with tourists, diverse shops, and a close-knit community. We envision a thriving centre, where residents and visitors alike can enjoy the unique charm of our town without the frustration of overcrowded streets. However, our narrow residential streets are already congested and struggle to handle the volume of cars. Adding to this strain, parents of young children rely heavily on Norbins Road car park for a safe and accessible parking space while taking their children to school.

Unfortunately, this vital car park is under threat of being developed into housing by Aster Housing. Whilst we deeply understand and support the need for more social housing, the proposed plan at Norbins Road car park is not the solution we need. Just recently, the Planning group narrowly defeated the proposal, but the battle isn’t over; Aster Housing is likely to appeal, with high chances of winning. If they succeed, our community will face even greater challenges.

The Norbins Road car park is more than just a parking space; it's a crucial asset to Glastonbury's residents, businesses, tourists, and schools. It ensures that our streets remain clear and accessible, and supports the economic vitality of our town. By losing this car park, we risk overcrowding our streets, which hampers traffic, poses safety risks, and inconveniences everyone who lives, works, and visits here.

We propose that alternative sites be considered for the development of social housing. There must be a sustainable and balanced approach that fulfills the housing needs without sacrificing essential community infrastructure. The need for additional housing can coexist with the necessity of sufficient parking facilities, but not if the latter is compromised.

We urge Somerset Council and Aster Housing to explore other options that would satisfy the requirement for housing while preserving Norbins Road car park in Glastonbury. Please sign this petition and help us protect the future of our beloved town and its capacity to welcome everyone safely and conveniently. Every signature counts in sending a clear message: our community deserves a sustainable solution which benefits all. Help us preserve the integrity and functionality of Glastonbury, ensuring it remains a place where people can live, work, and visit without issue. Sign now to stand with us in keeping Norbins Road car park intact for the benefit of all.
