Save Newell Street in South Silver Spring
The Issue
South Silver Spring is one of the densest, most diverse neighborhoods in Montgomery County, Maryland. However, for decades there have been no public gathering spaces.
When Newell Street was closed to traffic in 2020, it created our first neighborhood gathering spot. It has been a place where children learned to ride bikes. Where families could gather for picnics. There have been birthday parties and even a wedding here!
Despite this, our County has decided to remove the park and give it back to drivers after Labor Day. That is, unless we act!
We will be sending this petition to County Executive Marc Elrich, Department of Transportation Director Chris Conklin and Regional Service Director Jacob Newell to show them how much support we have for our beloved neighborhood gathering spot.
Together, we will save Newell Street!
