Save Neville D’Souza ground
The Issue
Neville D’Souza ground is not just a piece of land; it’s a cherished community hub in Bandra, Mumbai. As someone who grew up playing on this field, I have witnessed its significant value to our local community. It's a place where friendships are forged, talents are nurtured, and diverse groups come together, unified by their shared love for sports and outdoor activities. Unfortunately, this historic ground now faces the threat of redevelopment, jeopardizing its future use and accessibility.
Bandra, a bustling suburb in Mumbai, has few open public spaces left, and they’re pivotal in maintaining not only community health but also mental well-being. Neville D’Souza ground is one of these rare green spaces that offers an essential reprieve from the urban landscape. It’s named after the legendary Indian footballer, Neville D'Souza, a testament to its rich sporting history. Losing this ground to development means stripping the area of a pivotal piece of its sporting legacy and cultural heritage.
Urban development is inevitable in cities like Mumbai, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of communal spaces that serve our wellbeing. Reports suggest that public recreational grounds contribute to better physical health and social cohesion. In a city grappling with pollution and limited green areas, preserving such spaces is vital. According to a study by the World Health Organization, access to green spaces can reduce health inequalities, improve air quality, reduce noise, and provide significant health benefits to communities.
Our proposal is not to halt development but to find a balanced solution that retains Neville D’Souza ground as a public space for everyone to enjoy. We believe in collaboration with local government, developers, and community stakeholders to explore alternatives that would not only preserve the ground but enhance it as a public resource.
We urge the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and relevant authorities to recognize the irreplaceable value of Neville D’Souza ground and to take immediate steps to secure its future as a beloved community asset. Let’s preserve this vital space for present and future generations.
Please sign this petition to help protect Neville D’Souza ground and ensure it continues to be a sanctuary for sports, recreation, and community unity.
