The Issue

Narasappanahalli Lake , Karihobanahalli, Doddabidrakallu ward - 40 was fit for agriculture, cattles & even for locals to swim prior to Year 2001.

The industrization around Peenya & garbage menace has been killing the lake for more than a decade now.

The issue was raised in 2014 that high pH value was found at Karihobanahalli Lake between 7.4 and 7.9 mg/L (standard pH value is 0.01 mg/L)

Again local media in Year 2018 raised that Industrial waste contamination plagues groundwater. Of the samples tested, 40% were acidic while almost all were above permissible limits for hardness.Water was not fit even for industrial use

Year 2018 - some actions were taken like fencing of lakes to avoid garbage dump but in 2019 - sneaky encroachment attempt, several loads of mud, including construction debris, were dumped into the lake,The land encroachers had put into use an earth-mover to fill up the lake bed at a time when the entire City was shut for any non-essential activities during Covid. Encroachers even stole the fencing

Karihobanahalli lake, which was under the custody of Bangalore Development Corporation, was handed over to the BBMP. The waterbody, however, is in a state of complete neglect with industries continuously discharging contaminated water. The lake has been used as a dumping yard by industries located in and around Peenya.

Factories have diverted multiple outlet pipes to the lake. The pipes are covered with debris so as to keep them hidden. Some pipes run right into the middle of the lake.

Even the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has done nothing to stop the industries from letting waste into the lake.

Recently, when water from one of the borewells in the neighbourhood was tested using a commercially available Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) tester, the reading was 1120 parts per million (ppm)

The locality is surrounded by houses & schools.Locals have been complaining about water hardness, bad smell, froth & health issues.

Despite BBMP calling for suggestions on a detailed project report for comprehensive development and rehabilitation of the lake in 2022 with a budget allocation of INR 4.5 cr but there has been no action either by BBMP aauthorities, pollution control board or the local MLA

Narasapanahalli lake waterspread is around 32 acres. Also home to peacocks & birds

Please sign this petition and join us in saving the lake.

Thank you

Residents of Pilanna & Ranganna layout , Karihobanahalli
