The proposed Uranium mining would result in displacement of over 70,000 people, predominantly scheduled tribes, living in 42 villages in the area besides severely impacting the biodiversity. Professor Haragopal  have decided to organise protests across the State in support of the demand to stop the mining project which was not in the interests of the people. There was no need to opt for nuclear power costing ₹30 to ₹50 a unit at a time when conventional power was available at ₹5 to 6 a unit. There was also no truth in the argument that Uranium mining was necessary in view of the country’s security aspects as there were adequate reserves available. Studies revealed that the impact of Uranium mining would be felt in 150 km radius of the mining site and people of north coastal Andhra Pradesh would also suffer the harmful consequences if mining was permitted.

alleged that the liberalisation policies adopted by successive government were helping corporates to exploit natural resources in the name of Uranium mining. He recalled that the government proposed to set up an atomic power plant at Nagarjunasagar in the past but was forced to withdraw from it following the huge opposition by the people.

Efforts should be made to pass resolutions from the grass root levels against the project and the same should be forwarded to the Union Government conveying the people’s resistance to such projects.
