The Mount Vernon High School Music Department is an outstanding fixture of the Mount Vernon School District, with individual students and ensembles that regularly earn honors and awards on both the state and national levels. Because of the valuable music classes offered by our middle schools and even elementary schools, the band program is in serious demand with incoming high schoolers. 

 

 

 

 

The Mount Vernon School District recently made the choice to eliminate the position of MVHS’s second band director, Daisy Cardona. Without Ms. Cardona, students in the Percussion Ensemble who earned a place in national percussion championships will no longer be able to attend; summer band camps that prepare students for the school year will be canceled; pep band may be eliminated; the jazz band which desperately needs a third section will instead be reduced. These changes do not serve our students or our community. Ms. Cardona was laid off along with 14 other teachers, some of whom have already been hired back. We demand that she be re-hired as well. 

We are asking you to sign our petition to save Ms. Cardona’s job if you believe that music education shouldn’t be an afterthought but a robust and well-funded part of MVHS. Our kids deserve the opportunities and joy that a healthy band program offers. Our community deserves the talented musicians that the MVHS band department creates, and what they bring to numerous local events and celebrations. 

Our community should not continually be asked to create nonprofits that fill gaps in arts education. Teachers cannot be asked to constantly overextend themselves because they believe in the arts but their employers will not sufficiently fund arts education. 

Music is an equalizer. It provides ways for students to excel who have trouble in other academic settings. It gives college prospects to those searching for them. It gives summer jobs and gig work to creative teens and young adults. Music gives people careers and lifelong hobbies. Its importance cannot be overstated. Join us to rally and save Ms. Cardona’s position, and keep the band programs that our kids need!

El Distrito Escolar de Mount Vernon recientemente tomó la decisión de eliminar el puesto de la segunda directora de banda de MVHS, Daisy Cardona.  Sin la Sra. Cardona, los estudiantes del Conjunto de Percusión que obtuvieron un lugar en los campeonatos nacionales de percusión ya no podrán asistir;  se cancelarán los campamentos de banda de verano que preparan a los estudiantes para el año escolar;  la banda pep puede eliminarse;  la banda de jazz, que necesita desesperadamente una tercera sección, será reducida.  Estos cambios no sirven a nuestros estudiantes ni a nuestra comunidad.  La Sra. Cardona fue despedida junto con otros 14 maestros, algunos de los cuales ya han sido contratados nuevamente.  Exigimos que ella también sea recontratada. 

 Le pedimos que firme nuestra petición para salvar el trabajo de la Sra. Cardona si cree que la educación musical no debe ser una ocurrencia tardía sino una parte sólida y bien financiada de MVHS.  Nuestros niños merecen las oportunidades y la alegría que ofrece un programa de banda saludable.  Nuestra comunidad merece los músicos talentosos que crea el departamento de banda de MVHS y lo que aportan a numerosos eventos y celebraciones locales. 

 No se le debe pedir continuamente a nuestra comunidad que haga organizaciones sin fines de lucro(501 C3) para que llenen los vacíos  economicos en la educación artística del distrito Escolar. No se puede pedir a los docentes que se esfuercen constantemente porque creen en las artes,mientras sus empleadores no financian, suficientemente la educación artística. 

 La música es un ecualizador.  Proporciona formas para que los estudiantes que tienen problemas en otros entornos académicos sobresalgan.  Ofrece perspectivas universitarias a quienes las buscan. Ofrece trabajos de verano y trabajos ocasionales a adolescentes y adultos jóvenes creativos.  La música brinda a las personas carreras y pasatiempos para toda la vida.  No se puede subestimar su importancia.  ¡Únase a nosotros para unirnos y salvar la posición de la Sra. Cardona y mantener los programas de banda que nuestros niños necesitan!
