The Issue

The recent decision by Milwaukee Area Technical College President Dr. Anthony Cruz to eliminate the entire Office of Multicultural Affairs and remove its dedicated staff in just 30 days shakes me to my core. As someone deeply connected to the community, this move not only threatens the well-being of current MATC students but also undermines the broader Milwaukee community.

For years, the Office of Multicultural Affairs has served as a crucial support system for students of color, first-generation students, and other marginalized groups. This office represented more than just a department; it was a safe haven where students could find understanding, celebrate their identities, and receive the guidance necessary to thrive in an academic environment that often overlooks their unique needs.

The elimination of this office strips students of essential resources and erodes the sense of belonging that MATC has striven to build. In an era where inclusivity and support for diversity should be at the forefront of educational institutions, it is a disheartening step back to see this decision made without apparent regard for the impact on those who rely on these services the most.

Milwaukee deserves better. We need equitable support systems in place to ensure that every student, regardless of background, can succeed and contribute positively to our community. Therefore, I call upon MATC to reverse this decision, reinstate the staff members of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and commit to engaging in an open and transparent dialogue with students, staff, and the Milwaukee community.

Join me in demanding the reconsideration of this decision. Stand with us to save Multicultural Affairs at MATC. Your support is vital for ensuring that we continue to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in our educational environment. Sign this petition to make your voice heard and advocate for a future that values all students equally.
