The Issue

We, the students, parents, alumni, educators, and community members of Sylmar Charter High School, call on Sylmar High Administration, LAUSD and the Board of Education to immediately preserve the position of our college counselor,  Ms. Carmen Rodriguez.

At a time when students face increasing challenges with college applications, financial aid, mental health, and career planning, removing Ms. Rodriguez' position would directly harm the futures of hundreds of students.

Ms. Rodriguez is not simply an administrator. She is:

the person helping first-generation students apply to college,
the advocate guiding families through FAFSA and financial aid,
the mentor supporting students through scholarships, essays, and deadlines,
and often the trusted adult helping students believe college is possible.

Cuts to counseling services disproportionately impact:

low-income students,
immigrant families,
English learners,
foster youth,
and first-generation college applicants.

LAUSD has repeatedly stated its commitment to equity, college access, and student success. Eliminating Ms. Rodriguez' position contradicts those commitments.

We urge:

The immediate restoration and protection of Ms. Rodriguez' college counselor position.

Sylmar High students deserve support, guidance, and opportunity — not fewer resources.

We ask the Sylmar High Administration, the LAUSD Board of Education, Superintendent, and district leadership to stand with our students and protect this critical position.

Please sign this petition to support Sylmar High students and save Ms. Rodriguez' college counselor position.
