We are a group of parishioners working with a lawyer to fight for the reopening of Most Holy Redeemer Church.
The Archdiocese of New York has closed our church and taken other significant steps that, historically, are followed by a parish merger and the sale of the church property to a developer. The Archdiocese has provided parishioners with no information about its plans and no reasonable explanation for closing the church. Our requests to gain access to the church for the celebration of Mass have been ignored, in violation of Canon Law.
The selling of churches and church property by the Archdiocese has been going on too long. Too many churches have already been lost. This is not stewardship. And it WILL continue—if we don't fight back.
Join parishioners, the East Village Community Coalition (EVCC), the Lower East Side Preservation Initiative (LESPI) and Village Preservation this Sunday, December 7th at 2 PM in front of the church at 173 E. 3rd Street, between Avenues A and B.
Speakers will provide more information and updates on measures taken so far to engage with the Archdiocese.
