SAVE MORLEY FIELD

The Issue

DO NOT TURN OUR PARK INTO A PARKING LOT.

We, the undersigned, support environmental justice and park equity in the community of Woodlawn in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

Morley Field is the only green space in Woodlawn, District 5, in Pawtucket RI. For over one year, Morley Field has been fenced, gated, and locked off by the administration of Mayor Donald Grebien. Mayor Grebien intends to sell the athletic field along the Moshassuck River, to an out-of-state developer. This developer, JK Equities, wants to turn Morley Field into a parking lot for the Blackstone Distribution Center which they are building next door.

  • Morley Field is the only greenspace in the environmental justice area of Woodlawn.
  • Morley Field is within wetlands as it borders the Moshassuck River, and is home to migratory birds.
  • A parking lot would negatively impact public health, air quality, and the climate.

It is unacceptable to deny safe places for children and adults to recreate, especially in an environmental justice neighborhood. We are calling for the preservation and prompt reopening of Morley Field.

We reject the closing of Morley Field, and any attempt to create a parking lot. We demand the City of Pawtucket abandon its unprincipled intention to convert the field to non-recreational use.  Mayor Grebien, please serve the community and present a plan with a timeline for reopening Morley Field.
