Save more lives by creating more awareness for blood clot risks
The Issue
Another sad story today regarding a young girl in the prime of her life taken away at 16 because of a blood clot caused by the contraceptive pill.
I was first diagnosed with a PE on my lung in 2014 (photo is my actual lung with dark spot which is the clot) which was caused by the oestrogen pill. Nobody warned me, nobody told me I could potentially suffer one, nobody told me they can be fatal, I didn’t know what they were, it is not hereditary in my family.
I was NOT warned of any potential implications of taking the pill prescribed to me.
I then suffered another blood clot in January 2020, this time on my brain…the cause is still unknown but if you have suffered one before, you are likely to have another (which again, I was not told). I had a dulling pain in my head with numbness down my left side of body which only got worse as time went on. I couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, couldn't really verbalize much and nothing could get this pain to go. I was initially sent for an eye test because they said I was young, then had numbness move into my mouth, ambulance called, threw up and then sent home again as was told it’s just a bad migraine... I tell everyone possible about my previous clot because it is relative. I am now on blood thinners for life.
We MUST make everyone aware that the risk is very low however the severity of them is crippling and life threatening. Advise of the symptoms and take every case of “it’s probably just a migraine” seriously NOW.
I am one of the lucky ones who caught it just in time thanks to my mum pushing for a CT scan but was turned away so many times by my own GP and hospital because of my young age saying it was just a migraine.
Make more people aware and we can save lives.
We need to change this stigma that clots are rare in young, healthy people!!
Rare they can be, but they happen. This could happen to anyone, your daughter, sister, brother, son, mother, grandmother, grandfather, father, cousin or a family friend. Do not ever rule it out and listen to your body. YOU know when something is abnormal.
Enough is enough now and whilst I am still here on this earth, I will do everything I can to make voices heard for the precious lives who are not able to.
Thank you x
