We have fantastic news to share! Thanks to your unwavering support and tireless advocacy, we are making significant strides in our mission to save the Montrose live oaks.

Key Updates:

   1.  TIRZ 27 Board Members To Be Replaced: The mayor has decided not to renew the terms of three board members (Chairman Joe Webb, Lisa Hunt and Amanda Flores). Coupled with the prior resignation of another board member (Ray Valdez) this means we will see at least four new faces on the board in the coming weeks. This transformation is a promising step toward a more favorable outcome for our beloved trees.

   2.  Mayor’s Stance: In another encouraging development, the mayor has publicly stated his opposition to any project that narrows traffic lanes and to the 10-foot-wide shared-use bike path/sidewalk (as proposed for Montrose Blvd) which would have required the narrowing of the medians and the removal of ~300 trees, if implemented all along Montrose Blvd.  Mayor Whitmire has stated his support for 6 foot sidewalks which are in compliance with ADA standards. This stance aligns with our goal to protect the existing landscape and maintain the character of Montrose Blvd.

We are very hopeful that these changes will pave the way for a tree-saving design that respects both our community’s needs and the natural beauty of Montrose.  We are optimistic that the city will grant the needed variances to protect our trees.

Your voices are being heard, and together, we are making a real difference. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to preserving the heart of our community. And many thanks to Mayor Whitmire and his team for listening to common sense and the outpouring of support for saving our existing trees and shade canopy.

Next Steps:

Let’s keep the momentum going!  Stay tuned for more specific next steps after the new board is appointed and a new plan begins to take shape.  Meanwhile, letters of support and thanks to Mayor Whitmire are always helpful.  Send a quick note to mayor@houstontx.gov.

Stay rooted in support for the trees!
