Save Mikkelsen Library: Protect the Heart of Augustana University
The Issue
We, the students and community members of Augustana University, are coming together to oppose the downsizing of Mikkelsen Library, which would eliminate two-thirds of its current space. Mikkelsen is more than a building, it is the heart of our campus and a cornerstone of our academic and community life.
For generations, Mikkelsen Library has been a space where students learn, connect, and grow. It holds historical significance, preserving the legacy and traditions that have shaped Augustana into the university it is today. Beyond its history, it continues to serve as an accessible and inclusive space for every member of our campus community, a place where students from all majors and backgrounds come to study, collaborate, and feel a sense of belonging.
As students, we spend countless hours here, writing papers, preparing presentations, and finding moments of calm between busy class schedules. Mikkelsen is where friendships begin over group projects, where ideas are born, and where many of us have found motivation when college life feels overwhelming. It is not just a quiet place, it is a support system that helps us succeed.
The library is not just about books. It is about access to resources, quiet reflection, and academic support that fuels student success. It is about the late-night study sessions, the friendships formed between the shelves, and the countless moments of inspiration that happen here every day.
Downsizing Mikkelsen Library would not only erase a vital part of our campus identity, it would also take away a space where students feel safe, focused, and seen. This change would deeply impact the academic experience and sense of community that Augustana prides itself on.
Context:
In the upcoming months, a task force will be meeting to discuss this decision and whether or not to move forward with eliminating library space. This task force includes a few ASA senators, several librarians, and members of the administration, with the administration ultimately holding the final say.
The administration is currently considering moving materials and offices from a rented Augustana building into the library to reduce rental costs. In addition, they are proposing to relocate the Business Department into the library. Together, these potential moves would result in two full floors of Mikkelsen being occupied, one for each area.
This plan is unacceptable. If implemented, it would mean removing books, study areas, and workspaces, and it could result in job losses for student workers and librarians due to reduced space.
Although we are grateful to have ASA representatives and librarian voices on the task force advocating for students, it is not enough. The administration must hear from the entire Augustana community.
We urge the university administration, president, and board of trustees to:
- Reconsider the proposed downsizing of Mikkelsen Library.
- Engage directly with students, faculty, and alumni to discuss alternative plans that preserve the library’s space and purpose.
- Protect Mikkelsen Library as a place for learning, accessibility, and community, values at the core of Augustana’s mission.
We want to be part of the conversation. As students, we are asking to be heard in the decisions that affect our daily lives and our education. Mikkelsen is our study space, our meeting place, and our home away from home.
Mikkelsen Library is not just a building. It is a symbol of who we are as Vikings: curious, connected, and committed to learning. Let us work together to preserve it for generations to come.
