Republicans are considering gutting a key part of Obamacare that expanded Medicaid coverage to more than 20 million Americans.

They want to slash the federal government's 90 percent funding commitment to states in order to save money. This move would shift massive costs onto states, forcing many to cut services or end their Medicaid expansions altogether. Millions of families, seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income workers would lose access to basic health care.

Health care should never be treated as a budget line to trim. Cutting Medicaid expansion will close hospitals, push vulnerable patients out of nursing homes, and leave communities with fewer doctors and longer emergency room waits. It will cause real suffering and unnecessary deaths.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said it best:

"Health care is under assault by Donald Trump, Elon Musk, the administration and rubber-stamp Republicans in the House and in the Senate. These people, these extremists, they want to take health care away from the American people. In terms of this FMAP proposal, it is all part of the same scheme. They want to end Medicaid as we know it. They are going to hurt children, hurt families, hurt seniors, hurt people with disabilities, close hospitals, shut down nursing homes. And people will die."

Medicaid expansion has been one of the most successful efforts to lower the uninsured rate in American history. Stripping away this support now would erase years of progress and abandon millions who depend on it to survive.

We demand that Congress reject any attempt to gut Medicaid expansion. Saving money at the cost of human lives is not leadership. It is cruelty.
